Starlink is a satellite service that allows RV’ers to connect with the outside world. Whether traveling in your motorhome or recreational vehicle, Starlink can provide you with internet access, weather forecasts, and other services. Starlink has introduced a new option for their service called Starlink for RV. This new package is targeted at people who travel in R.V.s, campers, or river cruisers. It includes a satellite dish, cable, and Wifi router. There is no contract required, and the Starlink service can be canceled at any time.
Pricing for Starlink for RV
Pricing is $135 per month, and there is a caveat on the pricing but more on that in a bit. That $135 is broken down into $110 for the monthly charge plus the $25 for mobility. Now for the caveat: if you activate the service at the end of the month (say one day left), you will pay the full $135 and then get dinged again for the next month’s service. If you go with Starlink on your vacation, you will need to factor this oddball billing into your plans. Still, it comes with a great benefit if you’re not traveling full-time with Starlink. You can pause the service when you’re not using it, giving you some serious cost savings if you are mobile-only part of the time.
New Map New Locations
Starlink has a new map, and there are predictions on when services to nomad destinations are coming. Starlink has released a new availability map. The new map is very similar in look to the previous maps. It is broken down into areas and shows the current and future coverage. They’ve now updated that map to be a blue color (from the previous green). The new map is available here and shows locations coming soon.
Where Starlink is going to be next
As for what’s coming, the company has released a list of planned locations that includes everything from national coverage to new expansion coverage. Looking ahead on the availability map, they are looking to expand into the Caribbean, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic, The Cayman Islands, Jamaica, and Barbados. We should have Aruba and other places like Canada and Alaska come online early next year in early 2023. This is potentially great news for RV’ers making the road trip up to Alaska from the lower U.S. Starlink may make this easier for nomads to head into northern Canada and Alaska.
The Downside of mobility on Starlink
One last major thing to note is that you cannot drive and use Starlink while in motion. Technically nothing is stopping the tech from doing this, and Elon Musk stated it would be a service that Starlink offers. However, under their present licensing arrangement with the FCC, Starlink cannot provide in-motion services. One MAJOR note about this new tier of Starlink (that could hit your wallet like a sack of bricks) is that the R.V. service is always deprioritized. Compared to other service tiers and offerings from Starlink they claim that you may see speeds as low as 5mbps. That speed is absolutely, positively unacceptable in the 3g era and would not cut it now, with 5g being several multiples of that speed. In conclusion, Starlink for R.V.s is a great option but can be expensive. Suppose you are looking for a reliable and durable unlimited data satellite system.
