Ditch Your Expensive Internet for THIS!
What if you could have unlimited, genuinely unlimited 5g internet everywhere you go. Well, that’s what this device from the Calyx Institute promises to do. The MiFi M2000 can be obtained through their internet membership program. The Insigo MiFi m2000, compared to its predecessor, the 4g MiFi 8000, is better in almost every way. It supports up to 30 connected devices and USB tethering. It can be used as a battery bank to charge external devices via the USB c port. The battery is rated for up to 24 hours of use with multiple days of standby (but your mileage will vary.)
Carrier Information and 5G Offering Terms
T-mobile is the default network and falls back on the sprint network when Tmobile isn’t available. This specific Hotspot is obtainable via calyx’s sustainer-level membership. The cost for the first year is $750, which is steep. But that covers the cost of the device at a discount and includes a year of service, with each additional year from then costing five hundred dollars. Suppose you were to break it down to a monthly bill. That would be under forty-two dollars a month (after the first year) for truly unlimited 5g internet you can take with you anywhere.
The one caveat is that cell service is only available within the USA and Puerto Rico. And in regards to the previous model, you lose support for external antennas on a device. Despite these issues, though, if you live in the USA and rarely travel internationally, this is seriously worth its weight in gold. That isn’t even counting the pricing and security benefits it can provide.
Calyx Institute focuses on security and privacy:
Let’s go over what it can do for your privacy, followed by our other plans and costs. First, make no mistake you are still rounding your web traffic through a traditional cell company. All of which are known to analyze this data as with any other internet connection. If you don’t want your web traffic to be snooped on first, use HTTPS and end-to-end encryption. Especially with messaging, to make this foolproof utilize a VPN on all your devices. Speaking of VPNs, the Hotspot has a built-in VPN functionality if you want to route all devices by default through a VPN. Second, unlike traditional companies, the Calex Institute offers a private way to obtain the device. A typical hotspot may require a credit check, a contract, and handing over everything about yourself to a company. Getting the Hotspot is super easy as the Calyx Institute only requires a name, shipping address, and payment method. So you can use any name you want, shipping the Hotspot to a mail drop, and paying with privacy.com or cryptocurrency. The only concern for the privacy-aware is that this device doesn’t address cell tower triangulation, which allows cell companies to track the device’s location throughout the day. This issue is almost impossible to avoid, and it is not unique to the Calyx hotspot.
Plan tiers and what devices you get for each tier:
Calyx institute has three plans on its website. The first plan is their cheapest and is called the “Contributor” it has a yearly cost of $500 for the first year and $400 thereafter. If you split the payments up into Quarterly installments, then it’s $150 every three months. At the “Contributor” level, you get a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot (Franklin T9 or Linkzone 2). Their second tier is called “Contributor Plus” (as of publishing is currently unavailable), which starts at $600 for the first year and is $500 thereafter. The “Contributor Plus” comes with a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot (MiFi 8000). The third and final plan is the “Sustainer Yearly,” which is $750 for the first year and $500 thereafter. This plan also offers a Quarterly payment option of $175 every three months (only available as a renewal), and you get the amazing (MiFi M2000) Hotspot.
By the by, every Hotspot helps contribute to the Calyx Institute mission. We think it’s vital that you know that before picking up the device. So if you’re a privacy advocate, a frequent us traveler, and a digital minimalist on a tight budget, then this is an amazing deal. The cherry on top is that you are supporting a nonprofit organization on a mission to make privacy and security in the world a little better.
